SAY NOT THE STRUGGLE NAUGHT AVAILETH
“Say Not THE Struggle Naught AVAILETH” a famous and an inspiring poem, by A.H Clough was an English poet and an educationalist. His famous works include :
- The Thread of Truth
- All is well
- London Square
The poem “Say not the struggle naught AVAILETH” gives the message of hope. The poet says that honest efforts and suffering never go unrewarded sometimes the result of efforts is delayed. It does not mean that efforts have gone waste. Efforts to bear the fruit. The wounds given to the enemy never go waste. We should not be disheartened or impatient. We should not feel sad that we have not been able to change the face of things.
“If hopes were dupes, fears may not be liars.”
It means that if our hopes do not come true, our fears can also be baseless. It is true that we should not build castles of hopes in the air. But baseless fears may also cause harm and lead to failures. In a battle, the real picture of the battle remains hidden from the view, behind the smoke. Our Comrades may have been on the verge of victory. We have not been able to know of this due to smoke of guns. If we lose hope and fail to help our Comrades who need it victory may be delayed.
It may appear the waves are striking against the sea-shore in vain. But they may have deep cuts and creeks at some other place and the flood may come through those cuts. Similarly, the sun rises in the east slowly. But on the other side, sunlight is spread all over.
In short, the poem conveys the idea that one should patiently wait for the result of efforts put in. Honest and Sincere efforts are Always Crowned with success. We should always be optimistic.
