THEME
“All my sons” is “Arthur miller's” famous play. The play is based on many themes but the important theme is that there is a lot of difference between social ethics and business ethics. Joe Keller is a businessman. The only purpose of his life is to earn money. He is very selfish. He supplied defective cylinder heads to the Air force. As a result, 21 pilots died in air crashes due to defective cylinder heads. He feels no guilty for his crime. Thus social ethics remind us of our duty to our society and country. Where business ethics teaches us to be selfish, greedy and blind to all the social responsibilities.
The other theme is conflict between individuals and Society, a conflict between man's values and his environment. Thus play is not a drama of domestic or private conflict or quarrel between a father and a son. There is a conflict between thinking about money and more money whereas Chris thinking is totally opposite. He is an Idealist person and always helps others.
The other theme is wealth. There is only wealth which is the cause of crimes in the Play. The crime of death of 21 innocent pilots, the other crime of putting all the blame on another person. The whole story turns around Joe Keller, who is very selfish. Always wants to earn more and more profit.
There is another theme of lies. Joe Keller puts all the blame of mistake by himself on his partner Steve Deever who gets punishment for the crime which he never does. There is another fact that Kate always supports and tries to cover his husband's crime by telling lies to all. Even she knows all the truth, she always supports lies and loves her husband.
The other theme is the idea of guilt from past action which destroying present every person has to pay back for their action in their life. In this way, Joe was the cause of 21 Pilots and another crime he did that puts all blame on Steve. But every person has to pay back, in this way there was sadness in Joe’s life. The suicide of Larry and the at the end of realisation of his own guilt which provokes him to do suicide.
There is also a theme of father-son relationships. Joe Keller the father believes in the policy of selfishness. His sons Larry and Chris against him but writers point out that the idealisation of thinking in life is not possible in the present day world. In life but we have to be practical.
Title of The Play
The Title of the play “All My Sons” by Arthur Miller is suitable, suggestive and appropriate. it also throws some light on the theme of play. In this play, Joe Keller is a businessman who is very selfish for his selfishness and interests he did a crime by supplying defective cylinder heads to Airforce. Which was the cause of the death of 21 pilots. And another crime he done that he put all the blame on his partner. Steve who got punished even though he is innocent.
But his own son Larry, who was missing from 3 years knows about his father's crime and he did not bear this guilt and did suicide. He wrote a letter before suicide to Ann, who was engaged to him. This letter opens all the secrets of the play. The Secret of Larry's death and the secret of Joe’s crimes.
In this way when at the end Joe Keller realises his guilt because of his own son Larry suicide. He says “Sure he was my son. But to him they were all my sons and I guess they were. I guess they were”. He says all the dead 21 pilots are his sons. He is very guilty at the moment. so he goes to his room and shoots himself with a gun and gets died.
Thus the title of the play is very appropriate. The People should be responsible for other people also.
