NIGHTINGALE

‘NIGHTINGALE’ is a sweet little poem by Robert Bridges. Robert Bridges was Britain’s poet. His poems reflect a deep Christian faith and he is the author of many well-known hymns. His famous poems include :
  • The Growth of Love
  • Nero
  • The necessity of poetry
  • The spirit of Man etc.
The poem Nightingale is written in an-unromantic mood. The poem is divided into two parts. In the first part the traditional romantic ideas about the nightingale are discussed and the second part reveals a sad plight of Nightingales. The poet feels charmed by the sweet songs of the Nightingales. He thinks that these sweet singing birds must be living in an ideal world, full of happiness.

The Nightingales sing sweet songs. The poet believes that the Nightingales come from their mountains homes, valleys and streams. According to him, the nightingales come from a beautiful heavenly home and they sing a heavenly song. The poet is so much charmed by their songs, that he wishes to wander in the heavenly air of these forests where nightingales live amid ever-blooming flowers.

The song of Nightingales is represented as the voice of desire because of the Greek myth. According to the myth Philomela a singer. Her soul-strring song rings with pain and insire.

The Nightingales reply that the mountains from which they come are barren and the streams are all dry. Their songs are the expression of pain. Their song is a symbol of unfulfilled desires.
The Nightingales sing their songs all through the night. They pour their sad songs into the ears of men. They make the night beautiful. When day breaks, they retreat into their shadowy world and leave the wood to the happy birds of morning. These birds begin to sing in order to welcome the spring.
